Reimagining Music Practice: Designing Flow Through Story and Game Thinking
Why is practice such a challenge for so many students? It’s not necessarily a lack of talent or effort. It’s that—day-to-day, week-to-week—practice often feels repetitive, isolating, and disconnected from the joy of making music. But what if practice could feel like a immersive journey, with the student at the center of the story?
Mapping the Journey: I'll introduce ways in which game thinking can transform practice into a clear, purposeful map that helps students navigate challenges, celebrate milestones, and discover their unique direction within their musical journey.
Finding Flow: We'll explore how to help students design their unique practice programs, with the goal of facilitating flow—that state of deep focus and enjoyment where learning feels rewarding and natural.
Co-Creating Practice: Then I'll share ways to work with students over time by iterating and adapting, gradually refining an approach tailored to their needs and strengthening their sense of ownership and creativity.
Practice as Story: We'll imbue all these design components with narrative elements, pointing our students to their next steps and each milestone along the way—turning practice into more than a task and transforming it into a meaningful, personal story that aligns with their goals and growth.
This method deepens the work you already do, empowering students to take ownership of their practice and their growth. Together, we can reimagine practice as a journey worth taking—one that helps students find their way, their music, and ultimately, themselves.
